I moved to California from the UK in 2001.  I was educated at Balliol College, Oxford University, after attending a state school - first in my family to go to college - and completed my D.Phil. on the treatment of female juvenile delinquents in Victorian England in 1993.  As a policy advisor in the British Ministry of Justice, I worked on legal aid and family law policy including mental incapacity law and pension sharing on divorce.  I was also the Lord Chancellor’s speechwriter (for the notorious Lord Irvine of Lairg).  Between 2005 and 2009, I was the senior staff member at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University.  I  have two daughters, currently ages 8 and 10.  My husband, Duncan, sold his software start-up to Cisco in September 2008.  I spend my time volunteering with various organizations, supervising our house remodel, and dabbling in freelance writing.  I am heavily involved in the Bay Area’s Scottish Country Dance community, so if you need a caller for a ceilidh ("kay-lee"), ask me to find one!
