Bridging the Information Gap: How the Good Information Foundation is Strengthening Democracy

Women Donors Network combines long-term strategic investments with responsive funding to meet the moment. From climate, to reproductive justice, to democracy, to human rights, our approach is the same: we move money strategically and nimbly to sustain movements.

We are honored to support the work of Good Information Foundation, Democracy Now!, Unión de Afectados por Texaco (UDAPT), and Grassroots International with recent rapid response grants totaling $120,000.

Good information is the backbone of democracy, but today, many Americans are cut off from reliable local news. Traditional media consumption has plummeted, and misinformation is rampant on social media, where most of us spend our time. Lack of access to trustworthy information cracks the foundation of our democracy. The Good Information Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is on a mission to change that by delivering accurate, engaging, and easy-to-access news to underserved communities and potential voters.

Bringing Good Information to Voters

The Good Information Foundation partners with mission-driven media to deliver civic education on platforms where people are already scrolling – social media and newsletters. By focusing on underserved and rural communities, as well as Gen Z and new voters, the Foundation ensures that Americans get factual news from sources they know and trust. The content is short, skimmable, and designed to fit into busy lives, giving people the reliable information they crave and need.

Influencers as Trusted Messengers

In 2023, the Women Donors Network stepped in to support the Good Information Foundation with a grant to launch an influencer program, tapping into the power of social media content creators. Through this program, the Foundation built a community of influencers who used its civic news network to create over 350 videos, helping to inform and empower their audiences with reliable local news.

This wasn’t just about boosting audience numbers; it was about creating the tools and infrastructure that mission-aligned organizations need. The Foundation trained organizations on how to work with influencers, developed volunteer storytellers, and created a streamlined process to provide high-quality, pro-democracy news to networks built to counter disinformation. This work fills critical gaps, reaching hard-to-reach Americans and ensuring they have the information they need to stay engaged and active.

Building Partnerships and Expanding Impact

Collaboration is at the core of the Good Information Foundation’s work. This year, the Foundation has ramped up its support for grassroots and nonprofit organizations that are fighting on the frontlines to promote a healthy, inclusive, and equitable society. In key states like Arizona and North Carolina, the Foundation works closely with groups like Living United for Change in Arizona, Chispa Arizona, and Poder Latinx.

These partnerships involve everything from op-ed writing and video training to strategies for combating disinformation and spreading good information online. The Foundation also helps create in-state organizing tables to amplify content and gather insights that make civic education more meaningful. By connecting pro-democracy newsrooms with mission-aligned organizations, the Foundation boosts communication capacity and strengthens essential local resources.

Innovating for a Stronger Democracy

The Foundation isn’t stopping there. As part of its ongoing mission, it has rolled out an online voter registration hub that mission-aligned media outlets and organizations can use to engage even more people in the democratic process. As an innovation lab, the Foundation is constantly testing new ways to combat disinformation, rebuild public trust in journalism, and build strong state-based coalitions.

In a time when good, factual information is more important than ever, the Good Information Foundation is stepping up as a critical partner. Through strategic partnerships, innovative influencer programs, and a relentless commitment to delivering trusted news, the Foundation is doing more than just fighting misinformation – it’s helping safeguard our democracy for the future.

“The support of the Women Donors Network has allowed us to grow a diverse and exceptional network of local, trusted content creators across a handful of states across the country. We have reached tens of thousands of passive news consumers with more good, factual, local, and civic news, delivered to them by trusted messengers from their communities who reach them directly on the social newsfeeds and platforms where they spend their time and look for information – including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok thanks to this partnership.”
