Notes from Chicago: Recapping WDN Connect 2019
WDN’s annual conference has come to a close and we’d like to share some highlights. This year we were in Chicago. We drew from the city’s rich tradition of community organizing and the collective power of our network as we explored some of the most pressing issues of our time, from the future of our democracy to the future of our planet.
Speakers
We heard from so many powerful speakers at WDN Connect 2019. See some highlights below:
Shifting Paradigms
Racial justice organizer, strategic designer, and facilitator Ilana Kaufman dug into what it means to build and maintain a multiracial, intergenerational network. Ilana answered questions about what building community looks like and discussed concrete steps for how to get there.
From Women’s Anger to Women’s Power
In this conversation-style session we heard from #BlackLivesMatter Co-Founder Alicia Garza and Rebecca Traister, award-winning author of Good and Mad. They talked through the power women hold and women’s ability to drive transformational change. Alicia–innovator, strategist, organizer, and founder of the Black Futures Lab–and Rebecca–a National Magazine Award finalist who has written about women in politics, media, and entertainment from a feminist perspective–brought their wisdom and experience to the stage in an inspiring discussion.
Our Collective Call to Action
From the climate crisis to the crisis in our democracy, we are in an all-hands-on-deck moment. Heather McGhee’s riveting talk communicated this with passion and seriousness. A leading scholar and former president of the inequality-focused think tank Demos, Heather weaved together these themes with her commentary on our collective call to action.
We look forward to more next year.
