Emergent Fund News: One Year, $3.4 Million, What’s Next?

In 2016, WDN co-founded Emergent Fund to move rapid-response resources with no strings attached to communities under attack by federal policies and priorities. Led by an Advisory Council of organizers, Emergent’s participatory model enables them to respond to communities’ needs more quickly and efficiently than traditional philanthropy, dramatically increasing resources moved to the frontlines in times of crisis.

Emergent Fund in the News

The Emergent Fund was featured in a new article by Giving Compass entitled, “Rapid, Flexible, And Impactful Philanthropy? Emergent Fund Shows Us How It’s Done.” Emergent Fund uses a five-point grantmaking approach that is rapid, flexible, participatory, values-driven, and flips the dynamic of power.

Emergent Fund awards second round of COVID-19 Relief Grants

Already since January 2020, WDN members have proudly moved $750,000 to the Emergent Fund, with $450,000 since the pandemic. $100,000 of this funding was specifically designated for COVID-response work. In just the last month and a half, this funding has been leveraged into over $1.4 million in commitments to COVID-response funding from other funders and individual donors.

Announcing alicia sanchez gill as the New Emergent Fund Director

Founded in 2016, the Emergent Fund is a partnership between WDN, Solidaire, Threshold Foundation, and the Democracy Alliance. The Fund moves quick resources with no strings attached to communities that were and continue to be under attack by federal policies and priorities – immigrants, women, Muslim and Arab-American communities, Black people, Indigenous communities, LGBTQ communities, and all people of color.
